Saddle-style stools are becoming increasingly popular in clinics, specially dentistry – and for good reason. The benefits of this positioning are numerous, and research supports the positive impact on the musculoskeletal system. For those unfamiliar with saddle-style stools, they may seem unconventional, if not radical, compared to traditional flat operator clinical stools.

Polyvinyl Chloride or Polyurethane (PVC or PU) Leather as Exterior
Our PVC leather (polyvinyl chloride) is an original type of imitation leather that is produced by substituting the hydrogen group with a chloride group in the vinyl groups. The result of this replacement is then blended with some other chemicals to create a durable plastic material that is easy to maintain.
Whilst the PU leather consists of split leather backing, topped with Polyurethane coating that gives the fabric a finish similar to natural leather, with similar flexibility too.
Benchmarking on Leather
- Structure – PVC has more layers underneath its coating, making it tougher and more durable. PU has fewer layers, making it more pliable and flexible to work with. PU can even wrinkle and stain like natural leather would while PVC can stand more extreme wear and weather condition.
- Durability – PVC’s multi-layer structure and lack of pores compared with PU leather makes the material more durable than PU leather. This brings PVC leather mostly used in upholstery. Utilizing PVC leather could result in additional product lifetime as well.
- Breathability – PVC leather has no hair-follicles (pores) which make it virtually waterproof and high temperature resistance. However due this, PVC leather is much less breathable than PU. This gives PU leather the advantage. However, since PU leather has more pores on its surface, this gives PU leather the risk of absorbing stains and other unwanted particles.
- Cost – PU leather in general, is more costly than PVC leather.
Advantages on Saddle Seat:
Our saddle-style stool promotes a neutral pelvic position, which supports the spine’s three natural curves in a balanced posture. The thighs slope steeply (45°) downward, so the seated position is halfway between sitting and standing (think ‘supported standing’). The resultant benefits to the musculoskeletal system and from an ergonomic standpoint when compared with conventional style seating are numerous.
-
Sitting in this position opens up the angle between your hips and knees to 135° (compared to 90° for an office chair). As a result, your spine is held in its natural curve, which prevents you from slouching and thereby reduces tension and pain in the neck, shoulders and lumbar region.
-
The open hip angle lets you lean forwards more effectively than you can on an office chair without affecting your posture. This position also improves circulation in your legs.
-
Your body has to engage the back and abdominal muscles to support itself, which improves core muscle strength.
-
Your legs have to do more work to stabilize yourself, which takes the pressure off your lumbar region and reduces strain on the discs, helping to alleviate back pain.
-
You use your feet to propel the chair into position while you are on the seat, which exercises your legs.
-
The greater range of motion helps prevent joint problems with your knees and hips.
-
It is height adjustable and come with a tilt adjustable seat. This means that you can adapt the stool to your body and task to find your ideal sitting position.
-
It allows you to get closer to your work so you don’t overstretch and put strain on your muscles
